  • The operation of global networks

Nodes and Linkages

The globalised urban network is said to be linked by nodes and linkages. Core and periphery are another term that has been used to describe global networks.

There is said to be three core-periphery networks in the globe. The North American hub, The Asia-Pacific Hub and the European hub. Together these three hubs allow for 24 hour stock market trading.

Flights and frieght

Globalisation requires the movement of people and goods. People are rapidly carried around the globe on aircraft. However, aircraft follow a set number of flight paths.

Global freight has been containerised which allows for rapid and efficient transport. There has been a significant increase in the tonnage of shipped cargo. Shipping patterns are very narrow as logistics companies seek to save money by taking the shortest routes.

Road and rail infrastructure

Across the European and North American hub road and rail networks connect people and goods. There are improvements being made in the asian hub, however, the geography and politics of the region has not been as accomodating.

Improvements in high speed rail technology continue to put competition on flight.

Telecommunications networks

Business and social networks have tended to still require face-to-face contact which has favoured particular cities and even neighbourhoods. However, the steady improvements in communications technology have gradually replaced the importance of face-to-face contact.

This process started with the fax machine, continued with email and social media and has now embraced virtual meetings. As trust has grown in global finance and international dealing less and less importance in placed on meeting people.
