Why study Senior Geography? 

Geography is a unique subject that develops students' ability to investigate and analyse their world. Students will develop a range of theoretical frameworks and practical skills that allow them to analyse primary data and secondary research. 

Geography is a multidisciplinary subject which means students develop the ability to view challenges from a range of perspectives. Physical Geography allows students to understand how landscapes form and how they can managed sustainably. Human Geography focuses on the world created by humans and their interactions. Geographers also investigate the interactions the physical and human elements that produce patterns of economic activity, such as agriculture.
Some great reasons to choose IB or HSC geography for senior studies include:
  • Geography covers globally minded, interesting and contemporary material. You’ll be interested in the course content and will study better because of this. This will contribute to a better ATAR more than anything else. 
  • Geography is multidisciplinary. This means your work will support your studies in other subjects like Biology, Business Studies, Economics and Earth and Environmental Studies. You will get higher marks because you cover similar topics in other subjects and strengthen your understanding.
  • Geography teaches analytical thinking skills, spatial awareness and global perspectives. These are highly prized by employers and Geography graduates are amongst the most highly employed in the years following university completion.
  • Geography has great excursions! You’ll be out investigating the world while others are stuck in classes.
  • HSC Geography scales well compared to like subjects, such as Biology, Business Studies or Ancient and Modern History.
  • IB Geography allows students an opportunity for excellent marks with comparatively simple concepts. This mean greater reward from less work. 
  • Both IB and HCS Geography are great subjects where students can achieve highly with limited hurdles, such as the need for outstanding essay writing skills.
  • Geography provides a support for numerous prosperous career paths. Urban planning, real estate, politics, government employment, marketing, global economics and finance, education and various sciences, even medicine are all well supported by a strong geographical understanding.
