Ecosystems at Risk:
Student activities

Syllabus Topics

BIOPHYSICAL INTERACTIONS
VULNERABILITY AND RESILIENCE
IMPORTANCE OF ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT
ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
NINGALOO COAST
BADU WETLANDS

Study Skill: Note Taking

Use the Cornell note taking method to write a notes page about each of the syllabus headings before you begin the activities below.

Learning Activities

Biophysical Interactions

Create a Thinglink photo that illustrates the biophysical interactions within an ecosystem. Write a description of the interaction using a PEEL structure.
Answer here

Vulnerability and Resilience

Watch the video below and describe four ways in which humans alter biophysical environments.

The importance of ecosystem management and protection

Read or watch the Lorax (1972) and outline which values are shown in the story.

Compare and contrast the utility values and heritage values found at Ningaloo Coast and Badu Wetlands.

Evaluation of traditional and contemporary management strategies

Ningaloo Coast

Watch the film The Coral Seas (2003) and make notes on the various physiological and behaviour adaptations shown.

Download the climate data from B.O.M. for exmouth and make a climate graph. Explain how the climate affects the reef function.

Read the Commonwealth and Western Australian management plan for Ningaloo Reef area. Outline 5 management strategies used. Choose two and evaluate them.

Badu Intertidal Wetlands

Watch the programme The Living Planet: The Margins of Land (1985) and make a note of the biophysical interactions which characterise the intertidal wetland environment.
